Finding more energy. – April 2008

Wouldn’t we all love more energy. Think about the possibilities of what we could achieve if we had just 10% more energy. Think about all the things we could do in our businesses and in our personal lives. I am here to tell you that there are some very simple steps that you can take that can make an immediate impact on your energy levels and none of them require dieting or exercise.

I will be holding a seminar on this very topic in May in Limerick so keep an eye out for an announcement over the coming weeks once the date and venue have been finalised. The seminar will outline 10 specific ways you can immediately increase your energy along with practical step by step plans on how to implement them.

One of my favourite ways to get more energy and one of the ways I will be discussing at the seminar is to “spend time with energy giving people”. How often have you consciously evaluated your business and personal relationships on the basis of the energy you get or loose from their interactions? If you are like most people, probably never. As someone described to me recently, some people are energy drains and others are energy radiators. Some people sap the energy out of us and others give us energy. Sometimes the same person can be both an energy drain and radiator – children are a typical example of this.

So, if you want to get more energy in your life, start to get selective about whom you spend time with. There will always be people in your life that are energy drains that you have to spend time with but limit these interactions as much as possible and you could even try to encourage that person to see the light, tell them how you feel and see if they would be willing to change.

Here are some simple steps that you can take to get more energy in your life through your relationships.

  1. Set aside 15minutes to make a list of all the areas in your life or your business where you are feeling a bit or you are not making the progress you want.
  1. Pick 1 for which you have energy. Starting off, don’t pick the biggest one. Pick one that is reasonably short term in nature and is not too complex.
  2. Identify someone (an energy radiator) who might be willing to help. Explain the challenge to them and do not expect a solution straight away. Sometimes asking people for advice or a solution makes them uncomfortable so instead just explain the situation and ask them if they know of anyone that could help. This gives them the opportunity to either refer you to someone or to offer to help you themselves.
  3. Once you do this a few times you will start to build a great network of people that will support you and provide you with plenty of positive energy.
  4. Don’t forget to return the favour as often as you can because you don’t want your business colleagues to start seeing you as an energy drain.

Finally, think of people in your life you give you energy. Make a commitment to yourself that you will stay in contact with them more often. On the flipside of this, make a list of people who are energy drains and try to either support them in becoming energy radiators or make the conscious decision to spend less time with them.

If this is a subject you would like to find out more about, please send me an email expressing your interest and I will send you advance priority notice of my upcoming Energy seminar so you can ensure you get a place.

Until next time, stay healthy and stay energised.
